Opportunities for All at Leadership Expo

BY ERICA MILOSH

A Leadership Expo was held in Fels Lounge on February 9 from 1:30-2:15 p.m. Several tables were set up promoting leadership opportunities and organizations along with on-campus employment opportunities.

There were pamphlets filled with information for students interested in joining Bison Academy or the Emerging Leaders Program. Bison Academy is a series of leadership workshops offered by Student Life. Workshops range from basic, intermediate, and master. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the Student Leadership Awards once they’ve finished the program. The Emerging Leaders Program is a four-year program that helps students develop their leadership skills. The program explores what qualities a leader should possess and how leaders have an advantage in the job market.

There were several job opportunities available through Residence Life, the Academic Resource Center (ARC), and the Admissions Department. Residence Life is looking for Resident Advisors and Community Managers. The ARC is in need of writing fellows and tutors, and the Admissions Department is hiring Ambassadors. Other job openings include Orientation Leaders and Teaching Assistants for first year PDS courses. The Student Government Association was also present to accept new members.

The Leadership Expo is one example of how easy it is to get involved on campus, find employment or a leadership position. Every semester there is a need for TAs and RAs; every campus position builds up a student’s resume and work ethic. There are plenty of jobs and leadership opportunities for every student so everyone has a chance to succeed.

Students Experience Magic and Wonder on Mystical Night

BY ERICA MILOSH

On Friday, February 5, the Meditation Club held a Mystical Night, sponsored by CAB. In Fels Lounge, any magical activities were available for students to participate in. From 8 to 10 p.m. there was a psychic fortune-teller, wax hand making, and henna tattoos.

The most popular table that students were lining up for was wax hand making. Students were instructed to cover their hand in lotion then dip it into the wax. The most tedious part was separating the wax hand from the student; at times it took a lot of pulling and coaxing to get the wax hand off.

There was also a Henna tattoo station set up. A real Henna artist free handed complex designs onto students. The brown paste took a long time to set before leaving a stain on the skin.

A psychic fortune-teller had a table set up with crystals and other magical items to help her discover each student’s story and future. It was spooky how she knew certain things about people she’s never met before and many students were eager to find out their future. Others were looking for advice and guidance.

Many students wandered in and out of Fels checking out the tables and enjoying wings and refreshments. It was a fun Friday night event filled with curiosity and amazement.

#DStrong Dorian Murray becomes famous at Nichols College and around the world

BY ERICA MILOSH

On January 25 and 26, students, staff, and faculty showed support for Dorian Murray by having their picture taken with his DStrong hash tag or by spreading his tweet.

Dorian, age 8, has been battling a pediatric cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma since he was diagnosed at 4. Unfortunately, at this point the cancer has been deemed untreatable. Upon hearing this news, Dorian decided to spend his remaining time becoming famous all over the world and passing on his message to stay strong.

Nichols College has joined the global battle to stay #DStrong and help spread Dorian’s message and dream. So far, #DStrong has made it across the country and internationally as far as China and Australia. This worldwide recognition of Dorian has boosted his spirits and even resulted in him meeting a New England Patriots player, Rob Gronkowski.

Once everyone participating at Nichols had their pictures taken with a whiteboard reading #DStrong, all of the photos were compiled into a video that has been sent out to several social media sites for Dorian and his family to view (click here to watch the video). Junior Reilly Flaherty and Director of Student Involvement Brian Quinlan organized this support initiative.
